Magna Carta & the Human Rights Act

The Magna Carta is renowned across the world as a pivotal event in the development of human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was described as an “international Magna Carta for all men everywhere”, and led to the formation of the European Convention on Human Rights; which was enshrined in UK law by the Human Rights Act (HRA). Government plans to scrap the HRA threaten to reverse the hard fought for gains in universal human rights.

ALMOST 600 SUICIDES LINKED WITH TORY GOVERNMENT BENEFIT REASSESSMENTS

New research shows a possible direct link between the Tory Government’s vicious Work Capability Assessment (WCA) and a rise in suicides, mental health problems and anti depressant prescribing.

Charlotte Hughes has been campaigning against the austerity driven agenda of the Department of Work and Pensions for over a year now. Every Thursday Charlotte and her colleagues attend a stall outside the Jobcentre in Ashton-under-Lyne to offer advice, support and solidarity to social security claimants visiting the centre. These claimants are increasingly under pressure from cuts to social security and a harsh sanctioning regime that can be devastating to those it is imposed on, in an apparently arbitary manner.
